Opening Thurs 1 Aug, 6pm
Exhibition runs Fri 2 Aug – Sat 24 Aug
Open Tuesday – Friday 10am – 5pm, Saturday 11am – 3pm
In the exhibition “matter”, Sean O’Connell explores the various materials we use to create the worlds we live in.
Using high voltage spark discharges, Sean’s images reveal the individual qualities and internal structures of matter.
Rather than the usual light reflected off the surface of things we see with our eyes, spark discharges allow a glimpse within, to the internal nature of everyday materials.
Brick, carbon composite, celery top pine, silk, lead, meteoric ore. They all share a history and relationship with humans – through our use and manipulation of them, in craft and industry, forming the objects and buildings of our daily lives.
These images ask us to stop and take another look at the mundane matter that surrounds us – to see it, to feel it under our fingers – and to imagine and appreciate the unique and beautiful character of the materials we have bound into our daily lives.
Sat 17 Aug, 1pm
Join Sean O’Connell for Conversations. This is a free, casual event where you can meet artists currently exhibiting at MAC and hear more about the stories behind their work. This Conversation will also include a small demonstration of the sparking process where several people can bring small objects to be imaged!
