In her exhibition Floe, Melanie Roach explores the dynamic relationship between modern society and the natural world. Her works examine the push and pull of responsibility, belonging, change, escapism and community like the heave and flow of glistening water upon sandy shores.

Informed by a recent 8-month trip around Australia, Melanie intertwines newly adopted turquoise hues and bold shapes with layered organic shapes, a dense colour palette and a series of repetitive line markings that are heavily influenced by the Tasmanian wilderness.

Her return to the responsibilities of urban life after time spent consuming the energy and rawness of the wilderness is reflected in these works.

Spending time in pristine wonderlands, driving across endless red desert and gazing into starlit skies has highlighted the artist’s need to reconnect with the wild. Each work weaves a visual narrative that seeks to capture life in a landscape locked in a state of change.
