MAC’s music concert series is back for 2017 with a stellar line-up of Tasmanian musicians!

This beautifully eclectic program of performances promises something for everyone.

Doors and bar open at 5:30pm
All shows start at 6:30pm

CC STRUTTERS

MAC’s concert series kicks off with CC Strutters – a traditional and dixie jazz ensemble with banjo, bass, drums, saxophone, clarinet, trombone and piano!


MATT RALPH & YOSHI IZUMI

Fri 16 Jun

Find yourself transported by the sounds of Bossa Nova, jazz and world music from Matt Ralph. Vocals in Brazilian, Portuguese, French, English, Spanish and Italian with nylon string acoustic guitar accompaniment.

And, Yoshi Izumi, with a repertoire including jazz standards from the 20’s onwards, and a variety of popular tunes arranged in solo jazz guitar style.


THE BOOTLEG GIN SLUGGERS & THYLASWING

Bring your dancing shoes for 4 piece roots, jazz/blues band The Bootleg Gin Sluggers and 7 piece lineup ThylaSwing. Learn a few dance moves in the interval with Moonlight Aviators and then strut your stuff!

The Bootleg Gin Sluggers perform music from the 20s on trumpet, banjo, bass and percussion, and ThylaSwing! brings us swing standards from pre 1936 (the year the last Thylacine died in captivity) on piano, bass, drums, guitar, violin, djembe and vocals. Over several years ThylaSwing have raised funds for the Save the Tasmanian Devil Appeal.

With a style ranging from quiet, affectionate, sleazy jazz to soul that kicks and grunts, The Darlings will drag you into their world as they perform material from their newly released album River of Sin. Patrick Berechree on vocals, Sean Brady on percussion and Tom Schaap on saxophone.


NO FELIX & THE BACKSTICK AGENDA

No Felix, drummer and vocalist/guitarist duo Cassandra O’Keefe and Josh Troy, perform original soft acoustic and rock compositions. And, high energy acoustic duo, The Backstick Agenda, who write and perform their original compositions.


HARRY EDWARDS TRIO

An eclectic mix of original acoustic compositions, drawing on gypsy jazz, modern jazz and classical repertoire.

A celebration of voice! Sisongke is a joyous and dynamic choir up to 30 voices strong, singing songs from all around the world. And, BeulahSong, a local 5 piece band playing all original gospel/indie/folk songs.


TASTE OF THE FUTURE I – ASIA

From the Classical traditions of China and South India, Carnatic music duo Adhi perform as part of MAC’s Tasting The Future initiative.

Featuring Sakthi Ravitharan and Santhana Gopalakrishnan Vaidhyanathan, Adhi performs an ancient form of music based on śruti (the relative musical pitch), swara (the musical sound of a single note), rāga (the mode or melodic formula), and tala (the rhythmic cycle). The sound of vocals, mridangam (double-sided drum) and a tambura are drawn together in this mesmerising performance.

Also featured this evening is Chinese singer and dancer Shuang Zhang, with musicians from Tasmania’s diverse Chinese Community.

SCARY FAMILY BAND

Spanning ages 10 to 58, the Scary Family Band plays hillbilly, old-time, jug band, Istrian folk, and blues music with occasional sci-fi overtones. They have wrangled saws, ukes, mandolins, banjos, harmonicas, dancing jig dolls, double bass and slide whistles everywhere from Killiecrankie (Flinders Island) to Koper (Slovenia)!
