In Light Recording, David Martin explores alternative modes of seeing and understanding the world through photographs.
All the photographs in this exhibition are made without the use of cameras or light-tight enclosures. They are products of exposing traditional materials like film and paper to the sun and sky in the open air.
Analysing traditional darkroom and camera processes, David Martin examines their components and explores methods of creating alternate types of authentic photographic vision. Rather than dividing time into fractions of a second, these photographs are made over extended periods of time, ranging from three minutes to entire days.
Taking the early photographic works of Henry Fox Talbot as a starting point, this exhibition experiments with the physical process of creating a photographic image, stripping back the tools and techniques of photography to find what lies at its essence – a Light Recording.
