Opening 6pm Thurs 3 May
Exhibition runs Fri 4 May – Sat 26 May
Carey Merten’s paintings are bold, abstract and geometric. From a distance, their simplicity and symmetry is deceptive. Move closer to the work and you will be drawn into its subtle complexities.
The grid and the square have been central to Merten’s practice for 25 years. These geometric structures on wood panels are part of her ongoing investigations into pure mathematics and its representation in art.
Merten is influenced by the very beginnings of geometry in art. Her work has ties to the repetitive patterns of early Islamic art, the indigenous cave art of centuries past, and to western style abstract expressionism.
