Quiver explores memory and memory loss. Significant at a time when my memory is constantly challenged – conversations are centred around… “what was their name? …do you remember when?”
My mother’s dementia diagnosis has also made me realise how extremely precious memories are. The three installations in Quiver represent rooms in a shared student house in the early 1980’s. It is based on my experience as a Fine Art student in Bristol, UK at that time. I aim to demonstrate how colour schemes, patterns in wallpapers and fabrics can trigger memories from that era. Music is another stimulant for memory and images from promotions can take you back to events.
In Quiver I have played with and manipulated patterns and music imagery showing the passage of time. Also within the patterns I tell a story from that time – of a night I can’t remember – ‘quiver’ is the feeling of not knowing, the tremble in the pit of the stomach, the consistency of jelly.
