Open Tuesday to Friday 10am–5pm, Saturday 10am–2pm
Roulette explores the biological and social restrictions that surround the female body in the contemporary age. It is a visual interrogation of the boundaries and experiences of modern-day femininity. Andrea Green responds to the female body as a continual political site, through mixed media paintings and hanging textile works.
Roulette is a personal response to over a decade of using the contraceptive pill. Circular forms are a strong visual theme in the body of work, as well as hand sewn items called Suffolk puffs. The fabric is refrained and restricted from a natural form reflecting the internal and external factors of the female experience.
The work explores sexual awareness and reproductive rights and the subsequent hardship imposed upon Tasmanian women. This is emblematic of a broader social attitude that has persisted for millennia: that women are responsible for policing their own bodies, and that a failure to do so should be punished.
This local issue sits against the backdrop of global debates around bodily autonomy, equality, and women’s rights, and the ongoing nature of the struggle for an equal, respectful world.
