We’ve all felt it – the overwhelming sensation of being swamped by stuff.

The supermarkets, discount chemists, the endless rows of racks of clothing, the consumerist nightmare of the constant sales… too much stuff!

Instead of feeling overwhelmed by the constant call of consumerism, artist Donna Ritchie has chosen to cull her own belongings. These are objects that have held her energy – in thought, in appreciation, in muscle power and in creative possibilities.

Many hours have been spent shifting these objects from place to place – from countries, from shelves, from farm houses to apartments – probably more time shifting them than appreciating them.

We get to a point of saturation. Trips to tips, drop offs at op shops and incineration, all help rid us of the stuff. In this installation, Donna gives the objects she culls a moment of glory in the limelight. They are installed in MAC’s Avago space, a street-front window-box gallery visible at all hours.

Donna’s work often uses nostalgic triggers such as toys, tongue twisters and generic monster shapes. Her practice comments on social, behavioural and political themes.
